Or "James Cameron's CG Wetdream on Film"

Allow me to begin this by stating that I speak of James Cameron's 12/18/2009 release, not Shyamalan's Spring 2010 release.

And because I'm in a blue-furry mood:

What do I have to say? The movie was great. Excellent. Not Butt-clinchingly "revolutionary" as Cameron stated it would be, its no District-9, but pretty fucking badass in it's own right.

I knew that Cameron was overreaching with his claims of it being "the best thing to hit film" and I knew it wouldn't live up to its hype (I mean the man's been out of film for 12 years, and the last time he got behind a camera he made Titanic... yeah, THE Titanic.) But I know Cameron's a good guy, just look at what he did with Scott's Alien in Aliens!

But the hype was immense especially when, upon recieving his last oscar for Titanic, Cameron claimed he was "King of the world!" you have to think the king of the fucking world is going to do some tremendous shit.
Not only am I not one to be swayed by hype in the slightest (ooooh but I am a sucker for viral marketing!) I also had the slight beef with the outcome of the arm wrestling match between Cameron and Shyamalan for the name "Avatar" as a movie.
As all my watcher should know when I think Avatar, I think a little bald kid with arrow tattoos and serious mommy-issues. So I was less than pleased that our fan-worshipped film had to drop the name for the simpler "The Last Airbender" because Cameron decided to name his movie "Avatar" rather than the more appropriate "Dances with Blue Furries" (Or more aptly, Cartman's "Dances with Smurfs" suggestion)

Despite all this, I knew I had to do my man Cameron the rights and shell out the extra $2 or whatever for the 3D IMAX viewing. Packed in at 3pm on a Friday afternoon in an (extremely) warm IMAX theater, I watched James Cameron's Avatar.

I walked out with respect for the man, awe at the movie, and an extremely odd sexual attraction to blue furries that I couldn't quite comprehend. I am, as of this moment still confused by those latter feelings, though they have since been remedied by a healthy dosing of furless boobies. ;)

Considering what Cameron spent on this film, I can give him respect for gambling so big on a December-release film. I can respect him for actually SUCCEEDING with that gamble and making the highest-grossing December film of all time. But I can definitely respect him for making over half the film's budget opening weekend worldwide. The domestic gross may have been underwhelming (a mere $77million to the film's $500million budget) but with the $197million international weekend, the man knows his work.

I walked out with awe because the movie was stunning, the visuals were outstandingly done, the best CG I've ever seen and it supported a very well done story. A lot of people are trying to hate Avatar because they think that "the story lacks" or it has "uninteresting flat characters who like to satisfy their inner-furry" but those are unfounded statements.
I may not have felt for these characters as I did for say, Clive Owen's Theo Faron in Children of Men but I definitely felt more connected to on-again off-again crippled blue furry Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington more than I could even jokingly feel for Orlando Bloom's Will Turner, or even Russell Crowe's Maximus. Yeah, I said it, I connected better with James Cameron than Ridley Scott. Crucify me now, fellow Scott-worshippers, but Avatar was so well emotionally driven and excecuted, I wanted to go visit Pandora and have blue kitty sex under glowy trees say hi to the Na'vi, even if the planet would have eaten me alive with all those badass creatures it has.
Some people have said this is sci-fi "Dances with Wolves" But why do they say it so negatively? Why is that so bad? Dances with Wolves was a great fuckin' movie! That was true story-telling! And Avatar fulfills in every department.

And come on, Neytiri was hot for a giant blue kitty. Then again I've always had a thing for "big girls" now haven't I?

James Cameron, I give you the honorary 9/10 which qualifies you for an honorary Z-Oscar, only given six other times in history.

Now where's my God-damned Slumdog Fire-Prince?

Okay That's it

Now they're stealing our "term"
I liked the movie but come the fuck on!

Signing Tour Hits Denver!

Today, I went to Denver...
I went to the 16th street mall to a little indie bookstor know as the Tattered Cover...
There, I met (and hugged) Brandon Sanderson.
It was a good day.

Haha, but yes, The 12th book of the Wheel of Time was released on the 27th and, as I may have mentioned before I am a HUGE fan. So when Brandon Sanderson, the author tasked with continuing on this outstanding series flew into Denver on a signing tour, of course I had to go!

Hmm... Great fun was had by all:

My sister made me a cloth badge to wear before we left, hehe I lurve her:

I absolutely ROCKED at the trivia and quote quiz before Brandon arrived, and got sweet bumper stickers to show it!:

Got him to sign my Gathering Storm!

And of course I HAD to print out the mock cover for #13 and have him sign it, hehe, that's totally going on my wall:

Yes, I asked to hug him. Yes, he agreed. (As long as I promised not to try to slip him any tongue :XD: ):

Niell Blomkamp's Debut... sorta

So to anyone who's worth their salt in the online gaming world has witness the awe of Niell Blomkamp, South-African native, and his pairing with Peter Jackson, of Lord of the Rings fame, with the three short-films released to market Halo 3 in 2007.
They were stunningly gritty and realistic portrayals of what essentially boils down to a very, very animated fantasy world. (allow me to modify that last sentance by altering 'world' with 'universe') Director Blomkamp's almost documentary take on the super-fantasy Halo storyline was phenomenal, everything fitting into place perfectly between Master Chief, the Covenant and all the other nuts and bolts that make up Bungie Studio's revolutionary video game.
If you are NOT worth your salt however, you may find what I speak about here:
[link]

Now, Niell was slated to direct the Jackson and WETA-produced Halo movie, but the entire film was scrapped by Fox, who at the time held the rights. (Lack of faith in this relatively unknown director maybe?) The movie fell through and only the short films were made. The rights dropped back into Microsoft's hands, and Halo was done.

Peter Jackson, however, was not. Being the amazingly creative (read: rich) owner of a vastly successful effects and production studio, he put into works a "Plan B" of sorts. Not wanting to see Niell's first chance fade into oblivion, they began work on the phenomenon known as
District 9

A relatively "cheap" production compared to Hollywood's massive modern budgets, District 9 was relatively unknown until very recently. I myself, an avid theater-goer and movie-watcher didn't first hear about it until right around Star Trek made the big screen. (or was it Wolverine? I can't remember)
A short but effective marketing campaign that strayed into the realms of viral and ARG shot District 9 to a fairly large hype.

And I am here to state that every single ounce of anticipation for this film is well justified.
Yes, you heard me correct. It was worth it.

Since I first looked up Mr. Blomkamp and did some research back when Halo was on the horizon I knew he was something special. You throw the mind of Peter Jackson and WETA behind that and you get something magical.
I've seen reviews across the board, and with a few minor excepetions I've seen nothing but 5 starts and 10/10's everywhere. As IGN.com stated it is a "Science-Fiction masterpiece that you didn't see coming."

The feel and pace of District 9 is something to behold. Truely a modern masterpiece. The gritty realistic feel that Niell has become known for in his Halo shorts and demo-reel advertisements makes its stand proud and strong on the silver screen this opening weekend. Taking what he knows (South Africa) and blending it with what can be easily seen as his passion, Blomkamp has done something rarely seen since Hollywood released jewels like "Blade Runner". Taking the unreal, and making you live it.

A completely unknown Sharlto Copley makes his debut in District 9, and I can think that when he sees the numbers off this opening weekend he's going to thank the close friendship with Blomkamp that gave him the lead as MNU agent Wilkus Van De Merwe.

I could gloss a summary out for all of you, my readers, but even an expert writer such as myself (humble too) would do this movie shame. I cannot spend pages or hours relating to you what this movie is, nor will I shame it so.

I have only one review and one piece of advice:
This movie is outstanding and you better be reading this from your cell phone as you sit in the theater waiting for the previews.
Kindly remember to turn off said phones when the house lights go down! And this stunned movie-watcher will see you at the end credits. ;)
